About Us

Since 1932, Medical Business Bureau (MBB) has served the healthcare industry with professionalism, integrity, and effective recovery solutions.

Founded during the Great Depression, MBB began when Harry E. Mock, M.D., Chicago’s first neurologist at St. Luke’s Medical Center, recognized the need for a more ethical approach to recovering unpaid patient balances. Partnering with his nephew, John T. Mock, an experienced credit manager, they established MBB in June 1932. What began as a small operation quickly became a trusted partner for healthcare providers.

As healthcare evolved, so did MBB. The company expanded its services to support physicians, hospitals, billing companies, and healthcare organizations, introducing third-party billing services in the 1950s before focusing on healthcare debt recovery.

Three generations of the Mock family have helped shape both MBB and the healthcare recovery industry. John T. Mock advanced professional standards through leadership roles in industry associations. His son, J. Dennis Mock, joined the company in 1962, became president in 1974, and played a key role in establishing national billing and collections standards, including helping found the Healthcare Billing and Management Association (HBMA).

In 1991, Eric D. Mock joined MBB as the third generation of family leadership. As president since 1997, he has guided the company through industry changes while remaining active in healthcare advocacy, compliance, and recovery best practices.

To meet growing client needs, MBB launched Healthcare Recovery Specialists, LLC (HRS) in 1996, providing early-out programs, self-pay solutions, pre-collect services, and A/R wind-down support. Together, MBB and HRS deliver customized recovery solutions to healthcare organizations nationwide.

More than 90 years later, MBB remains committed to the principles on which it was founded: integrity, professionalism, innovation, and exceptional client service. Built on trusted relationships and industry expertise, the company continues to help healthcare organizations navigate revenue recovery challenges with confidence while maintaining the values that have defined it for generations.
